I looked at the photos for a long time before I read your post and thought they had to be photos instead of paintings. I found an old Poe story that featured a death's head moth like in Silence of the Lambs. I think that is where the author got the idea. Hasn't the yearly mourner who delivered flowers to Poe's grave stopped?
I love how you can see the woman's hands through her shawl in the first painting.
This may be strange, but the translucency of the headwear reminds me of those thin sheets of foam that used to come in board games like scrabble. We used to stand up on our tippy toes as high as we could and drop the sheets, watching them slowly float their way to the ground.
