Comrade's Quest

The evening last I watched the sprawling drama, Reds, about Jack Reed and Louise Bryant, writers during the time of the Great War.  They took initiative to go the action in Russia during the Bolshevik uprising and became notables for the Communist Party.  Go see it!

Now see the above photo of Jack Nicholson playing Eugene O'Neill?  Look past the mustache, to the  beautiful room he sits in.

Well, this short section of the movie spent at a gorgeous beach house with creative types in Cape Cod, got me thinking.  The house they used was perfect:  Light, airy, filled with books, linens and whitewashed walls.  So often seaside homes are left feeling light, airy and...stagnant.
(Trust me, I grew up five minutes from the beach. Bouys in the front yard as decor?? Pourquoi?)

Anywho, my quest for images of homes by the sea that look bookish, elegant and lived in (YEARround) begins!  Here is what I've gathered as of yet:

Now go netflix Reds, pause on the scenes of the cottage, observe and leave your report on my desk first thing tomorrow.

Class dismissed.

I love the images you found, especially the one with the wall of books. By which beach did you group up?

Super finds! I live on a large lake and we have beaches too, so I think that counts as well..you are right - there is something special about living close to water/the beach - if nothing else, the wind keeps cobwebs out of my head...yes, Reds is a movie worth seeing.. AJ

Thanks everyone! I was hoping I didn't sound like a crabby New Englander. I grew up in South County, Rhode Island where the sand is soft, seafood is fresh, and people don't pronounce there "R"s.

Oh, I love the movie Reds! How wonderful to find another blogger who enjoyed it. It seems to be forgotten but I thought it was a great film, great actors. And yes, that beach house made a great setting. Also love the pics you put up.

These are perfect! I don't know what this looks like inside, but it's one of my various dream homes:

Those book sheaves look amazing. Time to throw away all my non-leather bound books!

Enjoying this project of yours. My dream is to find an old house or apartment by the beach on the East coast of Taiwan, refurbish it and spend the weekends there. There are much greater places on earth than that, but it's a spot I kind of romanticize and it will be great for watching typhoons coming in from sea.
