On Mr. Stephen James Napier Tennant

"Later, asked by his father, Lord Glenconner, what he wanted to be in life, he answered, 'A great beauty, sir.'"

-D.J. Taylor

His great-niece, Stella Tennant, modeled for Tim Walker in his likeness.

Great to see the 'updated' photograph of his great-niece!
I think Stephen proved that beauty comes from the inside: He believed he was beautiful well into his old age when he had become rather....eh-hem....hefty!

Ever seen pics of his house? Waaaay over the top!

In a fabulously fabulous sort of way, of course.

Love the quote

Ooh, yes, "Serious Pleasures" is wonderful. So many delicious tales of a legendary eccentric. I'll look and see if there are some photos of him in his more rotund years...if so, I'll scan one and email it to you. xx

Grazie, Lisa! I'd LOVE that!

Salacious gossip, the whole book. I love the idea of the man, but I found the thing quite tedious.

Though I must admit I want his bronze portrait bust. Wonderful. I think it was a Tchelitchew? Can't recall, but I loved it.
