Hameau de la Reine

Somedays in the imaginary palace, villa, hut of our dreams, life can become very monotonous and tiresome.  The regalia, the gentry, the civility.  THE TEDIUM!

On days like these, I retire to my little hamlet, where "the chicken's are out," the milk's always fresh and life's always bucolic.  Now don your plebeian frock and join me.

This is one of my favorite places I've never been. On a weary day at work recently I spent hours poring over photos of this hamlet.

I almost titled this post "For Anzie"

:) My heart almost stops when I imagine visiting Versailles (again). Believe it or not I was on Versailles ground but did not know about the Queen's Hamlet, and it was such a hot day that I just rode the tram around the grounds. This was the 2003 European Heat Wave and I don't think my brain was functioning at full capacity. Kicking myself now!

I often used to imagine myself as Marie Antoinette---but that's another story---the Hameau is amazing. Are you aware of Surprise Valley Farm in Newport? A gentleman's folly farm with more than a whiff of the hameau about it, built for one of the summering plutocrats in the early 20th century...

DED...you again prove how much more about my state you know, than i do!

This place looks amazing!! Do you know if you can visit it? I can't seem to find visiting information between the bull sperm photos and rubber gloves.

Apparently they occasionally have public tours, but it is not regularly open to the public. One used to be able to see it well from the road, but no longer. It was also site of amateur opera performances, and perfect for it, needless to say.
